Episode 39 Transcript

Welcome back to the Marketing Combat Podcast. I am your host Chris Kubbernus and with me is the vacuous Jason. I'm trying to come up with a fancy big word that actually insulted you. Vacuous? You we talked about this. Vacuous. Is that like a vacuous? You're not vacuous. You are, you are un -vacuous. Is that a word? I don't I'm like Chris. You are anti, anti -vacuous. Jason, how are you doing today? Are you doing well?

Every day is a gift, Chris. If you haven't seen the Marketing Combat podcast in the past, we battle it out every single weekday for your enjoyment. And one of us has our belief on what the topic is, what the fight is, and the other person has to argue it no matter what, even if they don't agree. Today's topic is what is the best social media platform? This is going to be a tough one because I've been around, I mean, Chris has been around too, since way back in the MySpace days. So we've seen.

pretty much all of the social media platforms. But I gotta say, I think the best one is only for one reason. And it's not what everybody thinks. Everybody thinks I'll probably say TikTok? No. I think the best platform is Facebook. And let me tell you why. There are more people on Facebook than any other The boomer has entered the chat. I know. I feel a little weird even saying it out loud. But there are over three billion people using Facebook. There's a chat feature. There's...

image feature, there's video feature, they're taking all the other features from all the other platforms. So you can do the TikTok, you can do the all that. The ads are hitting anyone that you want to sell to. So if you're thinking about it from a marketing perspective, it's the largest one. Like I said, 3 billion users. So you can pretty much reach out to anybody on the planet and

So many people fight social media. They fight TikTok, they fight Twitter, they fight all the other ones, but not many people are fighting the Messenger app because it's a great place to communicate to your Boomer family. It's a great place to communicate to your aunts and uncles. It's a great place to communicate to pretty much everybody. you're somebody who uses a computer, you probably have Facebook Messenger and it's just one more part of the app.

that is right there. And it's been around so long that the, ooh, one more thing, it's just popped in my head. The other exciting part about it is you get all these messages from 15 years ago, 20 years ago, of the things that you were doing at the time. So you see these remember when?

Remember this remember that you did this and you have these images these pictures like images and pictures are the same thing But you have all these things from your past that just reminds you like how cool it was back in the day So Chris, I'm I'm gonna I'm putting it down I'm saying that Facebook is the the best social media platform. What is yours? My god, you took mine. I was gonna say face. So like now I'm gonna say tick -tock I'm struggling to figure out what I was gonna say because I

wholeheartedly agree with you on almost all those points. So, I mean, but that's not in the spirit of the Marketing Combat podcast. I have to figure out a different direction here. So I'm gonna go completely as easy - As long as you don't say Twitter, I'll be fine. slash Twitter is the best platform on the - The social media platform on the planet. You cannot get a better social media platform than Twitter slash X right now. And I'll tell you why he's leaving. He's like, I'm done.

We have an issue with censorship on social media platforms. And for good or bad, it is a business and businesses need advertisers and advertisers want some brand safety and they want some controls and I totally get that. I'm on the marketing side. I've also said like, X is going crazy, man. They don't want advertisers. They don't want money to run their platform. I don't know how they're gonna run, but they don't want money because advertisers are run for the hills because it's very hard to justify paying

on Twitter or X for this because it is the wild wild west. I'm a cowboy in heart and spirits and it is the wild wild west there, right? They're removing censorship, they're letting a lot of people on the platform that you might not agree with their statements or their tweets or their communication or their values or their beliefs. But Elon Musk and his team have said, you know what, screw it. We want to be about freedom of speech. We want to be about uncensored.

want to be about giving people a platform that they can speak their mind on because no other platform is doing that. And you could argue there'll be people who say, no, he's not doing that. He's only, he's also censoring people that are against him. And what I do know about is that we need platforms like Twitter. We need platforms that allow us to bring unfavorable ideas to the table and have those run through the wringer.

Because if we only see an echo chamber of the ideas that are acceptable by the large majority or even a large minority, we will have an issue. We will have an issue in society going forward. So I think the best platform right now is Twitter X because it is opening up a discussion about this, a very important discussion like no other app, no other social media is doing. And it is very brave of them and extremely risky and extremely problematic.

But I do think that it is a necessary thing in this part of our society and the culture. So the best social media, in my opinion, right now, and I'm not even talking about features, not even like videos and text, I don't care about any of that. The base fundamentals of what the internet is supposed to be about are built into Twitter slash X right now. And I think that's a very important thing. So I think it is the best social media platform.

I think everybody should write in and give you a pat on the back somehow. Because if I stole yours right off the bat and you pulled that out, well done, sir. Do you guys agree that Facebook is the greatest social media platform because it's been around so long and has so many options? Or Twitter or X if you call it that, but I, why would you? Or let us know if you got Twitter, if you got like, got, you want to vote like TikTok or Vine, I -Space, you know, if you want to go old school and like Friendster.
