Episode 8 Transcript

Welcome to the Marketing Combat Podcast. My name is Jason Donnelly and this guy punching at the screen scarily, look at the size of that fist, is Chris Kubbernus. Tell us all about today's episode, Chris. Today's episode is brought to you by Celebrities at the Met Gala. No, not really. But it is brought to you by me and Jason and we're going to be talking about blocking celebrities on social media. Worthwhile or a waste of your time?

And if you don't know and you haven't been here, this is the Marketing Combat podcast for me and Jason and maybe some other guests in the future. We tackle a subject from both sides. Somebody plays the devil's advocate, somebody's for it. The good thing is that we don't know which position is gonna be taken. So you just have to like roll with it and somebody has to debate something that maybe they actually don't believe. It's always a good time, it's a lot of fun. And today, like I said, we're talking about blocking celebrities. Is it a waste of time or is it?

And I'm gonna take the position of block them block those celebrities just block every celebrity you you know Just block them waste of your time. Don't listen to them on social media. Go live your life. Go live your best life What why are you watching celebrities anyway? Like what is the point of? Sitting there is it because you're jealous of their life like what are they giving you? like what does it give you to see Julia Roberts baking a cake? What does that give you in your life? No, they for that

Well, Jason would pay for that. I would not pay for that. I think it's a waste of your life. You should go bake a cake. Don't watch anybody do anything on the internet. Go do those things yourself. You have, you can use YouTube to get some inspiration. But Julia Roberts making a cake, or Julia Roberts at the Met Gala, and I know I'm dating myself here by putting in a reference to some 80s, 90s actress.

I'm sure there's probably better references here to people who probably actually went to the Met Gala. if you don't know, basically the backstory of this is that people have been saying on the internet that we should block certain celebrities because they have not spoken up.

against or for Israel, Palestine, the conflict that is happening in Gaza right now. And basically people are saying, hey, if these people don't take a position, block them. And I think that for those reasons, I don't think you should block them for the reasons of Gaza or not Gaza. People shouldn't be forced to give their opinion on something. That's not a thing that we should do. That seems like a very bad idea because you should not be...

put to those standards as well. But I do think you should block celebrities just for the simple fact of what is the point of watching somebody that you'll never meet, putting them on a pedestal. They're just regular people. They've become famous because they have a specific talent in a specific area and probably have lowered their morals enough to actually get to that position. I'm being really against it for this time, and then are really for blocking. So yeah, why put them on the pedestal? They're just talented people that make you laugh, make you cry, make you feel something.

That's not something that you should idolize. You should idolize yourself. Go out there, bake your own cake. That's all I'm gonna say. Done with this. Jason, you have to take the position of don't block them. So tell me why. I agree with not blocking them. Chris just told us to immediately block them and then immediately not to block them. So I'm just gonna... Yeah, I kinda did. So I'm gonna say, in our last episode we talked about, is social media dead?

Yes, because it's entertainment platforms now. And Chris just laid this right into my hand beautifully. These people are talented. These people are funny. These people help us go and get emotional if we need to. That's a weird way to say it. If you want to watch Julia Roberts dress up with Richard Gere in a movie in the 80s, you can watch that and be entertained by that. And there's no reason that you should block them because that's why you're going on social media to begin with.

to be entertained, to be taken out of this godforsaken world for just a few minutes and have a smile or a few laughs on your face. So don't block them, especially not for speaking out against something that you're not gonna force them to do. Like I agree with Chris on that. Like there's no reason to force somebody to say something, especially when they're just entertainers. Why do you care what their actual thought process is?

about anything other than entertaining you. Everybody hears like, you need to speak up. No, you don't. You're an entertainer. Make me laugh. Make me cry. Do whatever you want. Promote your next movie. I don't give two shits what you think about anything political on the planet. Just entertain me monkey. And I think that about many people on social. I called it social. On entertainment platforms like TikTok. Just dance for me. Cause that's all the platforms are anymore.

Make me laugh, make me smile, make me feel something so I don't have to feel the overwhelming sadness of the reality of this world. Chris, go on. I don't know, buddy. I can't come back on that. That's, I think you just won the debate there, with the just dance for my monkey. Just entertain me. Just make me laugh, you monkey. think that... Anybody who's getting pissed off that they're not talking about, like, real issues doesn't get...

that they're entertainers. That's it. I got nothing else to say. But then if they're just entertainers, why are you, why don't you go watch the entertainment that they make instead of the social media? Because social media is entertainment. That's it. okay, okay, okay, okay. Full circle here.

Jason coming in strong. love the arguments. man. Good job. What do you guys think out there in the comments section? Are they worth blocking? Not blocking being just an entertainment, you know, following them to follow them for that. Do you care about their opinion? Should you care about their opinion? We would love to know your opinion because that's the one that matters to us anyway. So thank you for tuning into this episode of the marketing combat podcast.
